Interfaith Youth Against Gun Violence

We are a group of interfaith high school students traveling to Washington DC in June to advocate against gun violence. We will be meeting with elected officials and religious advocacy groups to learn how we can affect civic discourse and policy. Help us raise money for our trip!

Hey guys! So this summer, there is this amazing trip to Washington D.C. this summer with an amazing interfaith group of high school students to discuss gun policy with various officials and groups. However, as I’m sure you can imagine, sending 7 high school students across the country isn’t cheap (especially when you need to account for all the pork-free marshmallows the Jewish and Muslim kids are “using to bond”. those are expensive). The group isn’t asking for donations, but any purchase of this shirt will help them pay for this amazing opportunity, and you get a really cool shirt in return (it has an awesome anti-violence quote and the knotted gun from outside the U.N. building). The one on the left is a kaiten submarine (Japanese suicide torpedo). The pilot was supposed to be able to eject prior to detonation, but the ejection was never used in an attack. In total, 106 pilots died; 15 of them died in training.

The one on the right is a tomahawk missile. I don’t have any fun facts about them, but they were used in the Persian Gulf war. It’s a cruise missile, so it is powered by a jet and is thus pretty long range. They could be fired from ships and submarines, and I think from land too but I’m not positive…

At the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. It’s both a military cemetery site (there’s some term, i’m just ignorant) and a memorial with a bunch of visitors every year. Super beautiful memorial. The dark shadow under the water is the outline of the ship. The rusted part is still above water. I think around 900 soldiers died when the ship sank on the Pearl Harbor attack of WWII.

Anyway, the memorial was super beautiful and super moving and it was oddly humanizing, after a year of APUSH where we hear about all these wars and then you stop and see over 900 names and it’s just people who died in one specific area during one attack. I feel like what’s missing from our history lessons is what all of this means. Because it’s really just a number when you learn it in class until you see what that means.

War is bad, and I think history classes don’t always teach us that.

But this brings me to my second point, a rant. They give a whole speech when you enter the memorial about respecting the site because of all the bodies and those interned and all that. It’s deep. But then the memorial includes a video you have to watch that was extremely propagandized, which is weird since it’s a memorial video for an attack in a war almost 80 years ago. Like yeah, the Japanese were our enemies there. We know.

But, after all the propaganda part, there were two things that bothered me. They kept referring to the Japanese as the extremist military, as if it was going against the government. Like, NO! THAT WAS THE GOVERNMENT! IT WASN’T A WAR WITH EXTREMIST REBELS! THE JAPANESE IN WWII WEREN’T AL QUAEDA! It was just weird.

And they didn’t show any footage of dead Americans. They showed living Americans and rescue boats and what was going on before and after but they didn’t show any bodies. Maybe because they were all underwater. Maybe just respect. But they showed the floating, clearly dead, body of a Japanese soldier while talking about the number of Japanese bombers we shot down as revenge.

No. That is not classy. Yes, he was our enemy. But it’s not like he was DOWN WITH THE AMERICANS I HATE THEM ALL AND WANT TO KILL THEM BECAUSE THEY KILLED MY FATHER AND UNBORN CHILD AND STOLE MY CAMEL AND MY BIRTHRIGHT AND I DON’T LIKE THEM! He was following orders! He was a victim of the circumstances just like the Americans who died on the U.S.S. Arizona!

So these pictures are in remembrance of all the soldiers who have ever died as a victim of circumstance. War isn’t good for anybody.

Like, really guys. Either make your status change early enough to make me believe I’m not hallucinating minor natural disasters (is that an oxymoron?), make it something more creative than “EARTHQUAKE!”, or don’t do it at all…
